Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, But Names Will Never Hurt Me

I embrace the label Witch, because as such, I can choose to believe in gods (or not). I dance to revere the moon, to celebrate the sun, to send healing energies to the old sick fellow who lives down the street… I do this without having to kneel in front of anyone, or anything, to beg for miracles. As a Witch, I own my failures and successes. I refuse to be ashamed of my human urges. I thank the glorious energy that creates all living things, and I understand that my flesh is not more special than wood, water, stone… — from Being a Witch

I was thrilled the moment Eliora, the much-loved creatress of “enchanting elegance for your magickal life,” told me she was going to sponsor Witches in Fiction 2013… to the Bone’s 5th giveaway with a handcrafted protection amulet. When I saw the first picture of the charming necklace, I got nearly drunk on delight; which is the reason why I chose to post about it on the anniversary of my birth. What better way to celebrate my witchy birthday, than to share the magical work of a friend who has turned a belief I hold so close to my heart into something this powerfully beautiful?

  6. Happy Birthday Magaly! Of course, fiery Aries, right?
That necklace is amazing. I ADORE the vintage fairy potion bottle on her Etsy (and everything she does with bats :))

The most wonderful gift I have ever been given was my parents co-signing the mortgage on my house, so I could get away from the city (that was drowning me). The most wonderful gift I've given to myself was probably my cats.

I'm sorry if my wish for the world is too general, but I wish for equality, freedom, confidence and self fulfillment for every woman on the face of the earth. I wish for this horrible porn and rape culture most humans nurture to be eradicated. I wish for 3rd world countries to stop treating their girls like cattle and slaves. I wish for every woman to be able to walk down the street with a spring in her step, to pursue the interests, career and partners that she wants.

I wish for pure feminism, with the vengeance of a fire bomb, basically!

Your parents rock. That's a great gift to give.

I don't think your gift is that general, if the world was more confident as a whole there would be a lot of stupidity that could be avoided.

Hmm... best present? Well I'm a simple person, I like simple things so my favorite is a simple turtle pendant that my fiance got for me when we first started dating. Turtles are my totem and it was at that moment that I knew he was the one for me (Grant, not the necklace). I wear it interchangeably with my triquetra and Celtic cross. Until about a month ago.. my biological grandfather's widow called me and said she was going through some things that belonged to my father's deceased sister and found my birth announcement! I was 31 years old with 3 kids before I got to see a picture of myself as a baby :) Something that so many people take for granted, was my greatest gift

  22. Not sure how I should answer that one because it's not a possession and it's not a material gift.

If I were to pick a possession, I would say my Nikon Camera because my husband bought for me "just because." But, that wouldn't be a genuine answer as far as I'm concerned. My kids are the greatest presents ever given to me. The reason that they are is because they keep me grounded in reality, they've saved me from drugs, alcohol, and destruction of my own life. They and my husband actually give me a reason to be alive.

It was hard to pick a favorite from Eliora's site, but the winner would have to be the Amber and Jet charm bracelet! I'm so buying that!

I'm not sure what I would give the world as a gift. I think I would give it a human race that actually respects it. En masse. I'm speaking of the world as in, the Earth itself and humanity all as one. I don't feel that the masses respect their connection to each other and the world they live in. I would give them the sense of that respect, the knowledge of their relationship.

It's hard to say what the best present I ever received was.. I cherish any and every gift I receive. I do believe that my son was the greatest gift. He is my heart and soul and everything in between. I don't know where I would be without him.

It's so hard to pick just one thing from Eliora's shop. Everything is beautiful! But I am definitely in love with her charm bracelets and clips. They just sing to me.

I think I'd give the world compassion. I'm tired of the every day, arrogant, self centered pricks who seem to be running rampant and not giving a crap about anyone other than themselves. If the world had more compassion, we would understand that every person, ever animal, every piece of the world matters. We would do more for each other and the Earth.

It matured long ago and I forgot about it. Unfortunately this year I had a bill for thousands of dollars I couldn't afford. I remembered the policy and when I checked the amount was almost exactly the same as the bill! Strange. It was a present from the other side, I am sure of it.

  27. I've been thinking about your questions since I saw them last night (it's a few hours earlier here than where you are... I'm always tickled to see posts dated 'tomorrow' in my feed).

I've been given so much in my life, it's hard to pick any one thing. So I narrowed it down to *things* and came up with this: the first gift my little Bear ever gave me, all on his own and for no particular reason. That alone would have made it special. But what he bought for me - with his own money, no less - was bracelet of skull beads. It fits me so perfectly, in every way. He was barely 9 years old at the time.

If I could give the world one thing... no shit: critical thinking skills. I was thinking that the ability to communicate with each other would be best, but critical thinking skills would provide for that, among other things like happiness and peace and stuff, AND critical thinking Can be Taught! It's not even implausible! Well, maybe it is a little implausible, but not impossible! Also, it's my favorite class to teach.

  28. The most beautiful present I ever received... I actually just got it this past Christmas season. My boyfriend, who was raised as a Christian, went out to a bunch of bookstores, and bought me a huge pile of Pagan/Wiccan culture and history books. It was his way of saying he was accepting of my faith, despite the differences between us. I was so happy!

Favorite item from Eliora: I love everything she does! I've known her for many years, even when I was little and she lived up the street... I played with her daughters as a kid! But if I had to pick a favorite... It would be http://www.etsy.com/listing/115058528/scents-ual-meditation-incense-sampler?ref=shop_home_active

And if I could give the world one thing... Equality for everyone. No more cruel treatment or descrimination based on religion, creed, sex, or even sexual preferences. It may seem childish, but I want everyone to be treated fairly, and to have the freedom to live their lives as they choose.

He had a funny feeling something special was up with you... he tends to 'see' a little more deeply than some... so surprise surprise when I told him it was your birthday, ha!

Eliora's Hecate's Wheel Pendulum Divination Set, definitely. Moonstone and obsidian together? I could purr, but I'll settle for a silent yet delighted yip because my Dragon and the dragonette are sleeping...

The best gift I ever received was a 2-parter: an Elestial Quartz and a Moss Agate Worry Stone, both from my Dragon, and at the perfect time in my life for a worry stone to see me through a transformation! And this happened before I fully realized I was going through the transformative process... remember that thing I said about him 'seeing'...

My favorite gift(s) are two that I received three years apart, and both from my dear friend. The first was my sewing machine. Although it is a basic stitch machine, I still love it, because it sews paper like a charm. My second is my new die cut machine, which I received about a month ago. The sad part of this story is, my friend's younger sister died and left the die cutter and other art supplies to her. She already had one, so gave me the other one.

  48. Happy Birthday Magaly!

To start, the most important gift I've ever received, was a music box that had an image of a ballerina on the front and played music from the Nutcracker. Its so special to me because it was a gift from my parents after my first performance as the Sugar Plum Fairy in a full production of the Nutcracker. The musical piece it plays is actually the Sugar Plum Fairy Solo. It was an amazing experience for me, and now when ever I see it I'm reminded of how much they supported me, and how amazing it felt to be up on that stage.

  50. Happy (belated) Birthday, Magaly!

I had to think about an answer for this one for a few days. Other than my children (of course) my favourite gift was a Yule gift from the parents of one of the students I work with this past year. It's a cardinal on top of an egg shaped boxwood topiary decorated with gold berry-esque accents, and it stands on an ivory coloured pillar. What makes it so treasured is that I commented on the decoration in their home and asked where she got it. When she told me, I went to the store and looked at it, and it was a bit pricey so I decided to wait until my next pay cheque to get it. Before I could buy it, Mrs 'Q' called and told me I had to come get my present before winter break started, and sure enough, she had gotten the decoration for me. I know how much they are struggling with three children (one of whom is severely disabled -- and the child I work with, and who is a total sweetheart), furloughs on the work horizon (the dad is a federal contractor), and having only one income source at the moment. So, it really, really touched me that they did this for me.

I'm very grateful to the one who gave you the gift of art, for I get to enjoy it, too. And if we get the gift you wish to give the world, then the children of our children's children's will as well. Let's hope...

  52. The most incredible present I ever received was the gift of crafting. To make beautiful, useful, and meaningful things for friends, family, and others is one of the most fulfilling experiences in life.
I was EXTREMELY hard pressed to choose ONE favorite from the etsy store! If I had the money I would completely buy her out! :) I settled on The Owl's Vigil, Altar Jar Set and will likely go back and buy it for my altar. It's just perfect and I can already see it there, with salt in one and water in the other.
My gift for the world would be the ability to truly see and feel how actions and word affect those around you. Compassion is a quickly dwindling trait and we can see the effects of it all around.

    1. It seems that the gift of crafting was not the only great thing you received, but also the ability to share and to think of others. The gift of critical thinking and the measuring of the consequences of our actions are great ones to wish upon humanity.

  53. Oh Magaly, how did I miss this post??? Happiest of Happy Belated Birthdays, I must just like to drag birthday celebrations out as far as possible so the party doesn't end and we get to enjoy more wicked good times in the excuse of a fav witchy writer's birthday... Was it filled with good wishes, perhaps a gift and a touch of romance(?) that's usually a nice way to mark a special day :) Ahh and speaking of gifts this wonderful Eliora Creation is gorgeous and just been browsing her Etsy shop and love the Black Spiral Maze Divination Board, actually there is not much NOT to like in her shop! Again Happy Belated Sweetie xoxoxoxoxoxox

And yes, there was romance... and some of it was from me towards all of Eliora's stuff !

  54. The most incredible present I've ever received was the drop spindle I got from my sweety on Valentine's Day a few years back. ^-^ My fingers had been itching to learn to do hand spinning, and with that spindle I've spun many a yard of fiber. I felt like Aurora in Sleeping Beauty... drawn to the spindle. Fortunately, I didn't have the problem she did with pointy spinning implements, and haven't stopping spinning fiber yet (I don't foresee myself ever stopping... ^-^)

Eliora's shop contains so many wonderful treasures! My favorite has to be the Hecate charm bracelet though... I love charm bracelets, and this one is especially perfect. ^-^

If I could give each person on Earth a gift, it would be the ability for them to have endless amounts of radical Self love... I think this would go a long ways to fixing lots of what's broken. ^-^ <3

Thanks, Magaly, and thank you Eliora for gifting such a fabulous necklace! =D

    XOXO

    1. A drop spindle... wow, it does sound like the gift in a fairy tale. I bet you are always smiling as you spin and spin away. I'm not very good at doing much of anything with a needle ;-( I can saw a button or mend something small. I'm always saying that I will learn, I think I need to give myself that gift...

  55. I have had so many wonderful gifts in my life that I cannot single a certain one out. But I will say, that my favorites inspire the witch in me, because it means the gifter truly had me in mind when they chose it. I love the quote you shared in the opening of this post. So beautiful.

Oh girl, what is so funny is I was so tired last night when I read this post and I thought to myself, "that sounds so much like what Magaly herself would say in that special way she has of her heart's expression." LMAO And it was you. Had I been more awake, I'd have clicked the link, or at the very least, remembered reading it. So sorry.

  59. If I could give the world any gift, it would be the ability to look backwards in time. People could look back and see all the mistakes we made, and try to fix them. We could learn about where we come from, and establish firmer roots in the present.

  62. The best gift I have ever received is my son. I was 19 when he was born. His father had left the state after deciding "a baby isn't what I need right now." I was terrified but had a wonderful circle of support in my family. He amazed me from the beginning. He came into this world with an aura the was visible to everyone. He captured the hearts of everyone he met. Random people would see him with my parents and be so taken with him that they would say "he is going to do something big one day. I can just tell." He is an old soul. When he was 2, he would pick out all of the coconut jelly beans and hand them to my Mom and say "here you go, Granny. These are your favorite." At the age of 7, a child at daycare destroyed his favorite lunchbox. The supervisor in charge explained to my Mom that this child was going to his 3rd foster home but she would make sure we were compensated. My son looked at the lady and said "It is okay. I think he is just sad because he does not have nice things and a family like me." The list goes on and on. He is now 17 and still has such an amazing moral compass. He literally saved my life. If not for him, I don't think I'd be alive. Between battling chronic depression all my life and a drinking problem during my 20s - 30s, he is what has kept me going and inspired me to change my life. There is no greater gift than the unconditional love of a child.

  63. The best gift I ever received was my daughter. I know this is a common answer, but it does not take away the importance. From my daughter, I learned patience, acceptance, time management, and happiness that I thought I'd lost. She taught me that I could be strong, that I needed no one but myself. She brought that magic within myself back to life.

  64. I would say the greatest gift (besides my girls) I received wasn't really one I "received" per se. It was something I took. Sounds horrible, but hear me out. When my mother passed, everything was given to my father's other daughter (others would call her a "half sister"...I call her many other things). She took *everything*, including the mother's ring and pearl ring that I gave her over the years that should have come to me. I, blessedly enough, found my mom's Senior Class ring, and quietly slipped it into my pocket when when the One Who Shall Not Be Named wasn't looking. I keep it with me everywhere I go. Even if I didn't have a chance to be close to her in life, she is close to me in the afterlife.

I absolutely LOVE her Goddess Isis Charm Clip. I have always love Isis personally.

The gift I would give the world is, well, me. I know that probably sounds arrogant, but what greater gift can you give but the gift of your uniqueness, beauty, understanding, love and hope?

  65. Lovely shop, I like the Celestial Goddess Charm Clip.

The most incredible present I ever received was my beautiful son. He is the best thing I have ever done and the gift was two fold. He gave me a beautiful granddaughter as the second gift and I see him as a child whenever I look into her enchanting eyes.

If I could give the world a gift it would be the gift of acceptance. There is not enough acceptance of anything anymore. Whether it is race, creed, the way someone lives, how different cultures are, people all seem to have opinions about everything but not many are accepting of very much.

  66. The most incredible present I ever received with a very large framed cloth print of my dog. We had to move and were unable to take our pets despite trying very hard. We found them amazing homes and keep in touch with the new owners but it was still very hard for me. My boyfriend gave me the print of my dog which was so large it had to have a custom frame made. It means so much to me and it hangs in my living room.

  68. I am going take a bit of a veer off of a specific gift and say that any gift, I get big or small, when I can tell that someone has really tried to get me something they know I will love. I have received gifts from people that I thought knew me and when I opened it I thought "Did you pick this out while waiting in the checkout line at the drugstore?" It means a lot when I can tell someone really gets me.

  70. My husband has been buying my fake roses since we were dating. Seems silly, but they last longer. And he does it on a whim, which makes it more special. I still have the very first one he ever bought me. He stuck it in my car while I was at work. I came out to my car after work and there it was in the middle console. I was so surprised. No one had EVER bought me anything like that. And because its fake I can look at it forever and remember that feeling.
