I’m fascinated by that which is known, but not quite understood. I enjoy exploring stories of peculiar beings, learning the histories behind their mythologies, and if they have not tale, I often write it. I love seeing from a perspective that is only mine, and looking at the world through different people’s eyes.

Our society’s conceived notions of beauty and ugliness, evil and good, light and darkness intrigue me.

With All Hallow’s Grim 2012: The Darker Side of Faerie, I wish to explore and celebrate Teugghia, The Larvae, The Washerwomen and Singers of the Night, and all the other faerie creatures that are either left out of today’s culture, or are only portrayed as horrible beings without anything resembling positive emotions.

I’m hoping for stories, paintings, sculptures, articles, and any art we can use to shed light on uncanny mythology, and make it as real as our imagination will allow. Share your answers to questions like:
Who loves Teugghia’s heart and appreciates her bumpier side?
Where does The Larvae buy brassieres, hats, and hoof-less gloves?
How do the Washerwomen and Singers of the Night adjust in a modern world of polluted waters?
Make it fun, make it sad, make dark, make real, but make this party yours, my Wicked Darlings.

Not Too Many Rules for The Darker Side of Fearie:
1. Leave a comment, telling me about what you might do for the party.
2. Grab the party button and add it to your sidebar.

  9. This is exciting! I was too shy to contribute a post last year. Still pretty shy this year. My comfort zone is participating by visiting all the blogs or as many as I can and commenting. Yeah, maybe I'll keep doing that 'cause that's fun too.

I hope there will be lots of goodies to eat because all that blog hopping will make me hungry. I don't mean to impose on anyone to cook but maybe a few ideas for the menu would help.

Let's see: stewed hearts, stuffed lung, breaded brain cutlets, and candied eyes. A nice glass of blood wine would be lovely, a bloody mary (and I mean blood from Mary) or perhaps a bitter tears-tini.

I'm watching my waistline, but a bit of blood pudding for dessert would be a tasty way to end the meal.

    See you then.

    1. Candied eyes and or eyeball stew. The Little Princess and went to the Hall of Science and saw a cow's eye dissection. The eye had a bucket of eyeballs (okay, there were only three left) but a bucket sounds more dramatic. We should go and get some for your menu ;-)

  12. The Teugghia reminds me strongly of Hel. Looking forward to how others see the Washerwomen & Singers (for myself, I'd be pissed at the 'extra' work).

    1. She does indeed! Specially with the two halves to Hel, one being black and the other flesh toned.

I'm very curious to see what everyone will do with the numerous mythological creatures that don't meet society's notion of pretty or good. It will be interesting.

Hm, maybe you should tell us more about Hel and how she might relate to the darker side of faerie *cough, cough*

    4. I wish I could remember where I read this: With Aquarians (me) there is a fine line between genius & insanity, which Aquarius frequently blurs. As for Aries, they always look before they leap, but then leap anyway.

      Delete
    5. I will write about my take on Hel.

      Delete
    6. That's because we (Aries) know that the jump can break our necks, but not jumping and exploring can break our souls. We would always put the second before the first ;-)

      I LOVE the genius/insanity mix!

  17. Ok.. I'm joining lol.. I've been looking for a certain fairy tale but since I can't find anything actually written, I think I'll be making one up.. But told in an old rhyming, sing-songy fashion.. Dark fairies and All Hallow's Eve just go work together lol. It'll be just as dark as last years (hopefully). I think the wine will be making another appearance this year..

Oh! I might be either early or late with my party post.. I'm flying out to Jersey on the 25th for a Halloween Wedding (my sister) and I'm not sure if I'll have enough brains before/after the flight.. But I WILL be attending ;-)

    1. Rhyming dark fairy tale, there is a delicious challenge. I'm jealous that you get to watch Grimm. We (my Piano Man and I) need to finish Sherlock first, then I think we're watching Being Human and then Grimm!

Early is better than late for the post. Like that people can visit you while you are partying in Jersey ;-)

  18. You know I'm in, Dearie!

I'm loving the TV show "Grimm" right now, so a look into the darker, original Grimm's Faery tales might be something that interests me. Or perhaps I'll tell a story about my own Fae experiences - they are a tricky bunch and I've had a couple run-in's with them (albeit not so dark, thank goodness!)

    Can't wait for the fun!

  21. Oh, Magaly, the Altered Witch Shoe sank its claws into me and seems to have turned me into a Web Party Junkie. Count me in...is it ok to feature a Bahamian "evil" creature? If so, the Chickcharney of Andros & I will get to know each other VERY well. (I'll keep it PG 13);-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sarah, I love variety. I know nothing about Bahamian creatures of any kind. I'm writing two stories, and one is not PG. And the idea of good and evil is one so blurry, that who knows what they are exactly.

    1. The best tip that I can give as of what to do is to think of deconstruction. Today's society paints faeries with glitter and as precious little things. When they speak of harsher faeries they make them evil, but can looks or nature truly make a being evil? No, right? The aim of the party is to show that just because something looks unpleasant to certain people's eyes, it doesn't mean that the thing itself isn't beautiful and kind and loving and brave...

Think Elpheba Thropp in Gregory Maguire's Wicked... I know she is not a faerie, but think about how the author deconstructed The Wicked Witch ;-)
