Of Wands and Gourds and Friends

Yesterday, a Sexy, Dark & Bloody Fiction partier emailed me to say she was worried about her party post. “I’m not sure if I get the concept,” she said. “I’m new to the online arena and feel a little self-conscious. I don’t want to look foolish and lost in front of the whole world.” The rest of her email points out that my blogoversary party is supposed to be about debunking stereotypes, but as much as “I enjoy your stories,” she wrote “I don’t think you are addressing the topic.”

My reply to her was long and mostly about stuff that have nothing to do with the party—we discussed male input on female contraception, but that’s another entry. This post is about my final lines to her. I said, “When it comes to stereotypes, and to most things in life, I prefer doing instead of preaching. I don’t want to tell the world ‘this is what witches do.’ My intention is to show how different Witches—both in reality and in fiction—live their lives.”

I believe that the most effective way to get rid of stereotypes is to show ourselves living, so others can see that we are like no one else out there. For me, living is loving my Piano Man, writing dark fiction, learning, being there for my family and friends, sharing bookish thoughts, and finding new means to express all of the former in a way that is true to me, even—or perhaps especially—if my way doesn’t follow stereotypical expectations.

Having said that…

Let me tell you that, today, I’m 35-springs-young, and bursting with energy. I was ready to post my fictional piece for the day—a bit of flash fiction that showed a male witch using Mina’s wand and gourd to help a friend out of a binding. But you know what? This last week, I’ve had Mina and OmaLinda in my mind. My two friends have been going through tough situations. And as much as I love my own fiction, posting a story just didn’t feel right.

Today, on the celebration of the 35th spring since the day of my birth, I wish to ask that when you wish me a happy birthday, you redirect that jolt of positive energy towards my Mina and my OmaLinda. I want to see them covered in the brightness of your wishes. I wish you to flood their day with positive messages.

The guidance for today’s Sexy, Dark & Bloody Fiction party giveaway is different and the gifts are glorious: the winner will get a wand and a gourd from Familiar Creations by Mina, which I should mention was carved, decorated and blessed by the combined efforts of Mina’s adorable family.
Wondering how to enter the giveaway? It’s easy, my Wicked Luvs:
1. Visit Green Witch with Sprinkles and Olde Baggs ‘n Stuft Shirts, and in your own words, tell Mina and Linda that they have a witchy friend in New York City who, on her birthday, wishes them brightness, giggles and hopeful tomorrows.

Extra Entries (Yes, I’m eclectic enough to be predictable at times.):
1. Be a Wicked Darling (follow Pagan Culture)
2. Blog about this entry, and leave a link to the post
3. Tweet about this entry, and leave a link to the tweet
4. Follow my writing site.
5. Favor Familiar Creations by Mina. Tell me what item you like best.
* This giveaway ends April 17th.
** The winner gets to choose from several different bowls.
*** The lucky winner will be chosen via Randomizer. I’ll announce her or his name on April 19th at 12:13am EST. Great luck, my Luvs ;-)

  6. My favorite item at Minas' Etsy is the feather inscribed offering bowl. It reminds me of Holle...how folk would look at the snow falling & say 'Look, Holle is shaking her down-filled pillows again!' (favorite Minas' shop under Petoskystone).

  7. Happy Birthday, Magaly!!! As my gift to you I wish Mina, and Oma positive paths ahead.

My thoughts on being a witch are just this...I will be who I am, whether, Witch, Catholic, Buddhist or any other religious belief. I am not made from dough so no one can use a cookie cutter image of a witch on me. I love who I am, and how I got here. It makes me who I am~~~

Birthday Hugs & Blessings My Friend,

    1. Life is all about being ourselves. I think that's the biggest gift we can give to the universe, ourselves and those around us--even if the latter can't always see it that way ;-)

  10. And the true nature of a friend is how she gives what is hers to others.....and here you are being the sweetest, kindest, most loyal and loving friend to both Mina, who I adore and me. It is your beauty inside and out that makes this the easiest wishing of the day.
May you always have love, happiness and strength woven into your life and may you always have someone to share them with. With all my heart I wish you the Happy Happiest Birthday my wickedy darling girl, Oma Linda

    1. You are at the roots of much of my happiness, my Oma Linda. Your guidance and no nonsense approach to life and love has opened my eyes in ways I didn't think possible. Friends do that to you. And in the selfish ways of love, my heart wants you to live forever and to be happy so that it can feed from the loveliness that is you. After I finish cleaning and cleansing my house, I'll dance for you and Mina. I've been letting the energy accumulate, so be ready for a massive jolt!

  11. Oh my beautiful Magaly, I cannot tell you how you have brought the glint back into my eye, reverberated the beat of my heart and reawakened the "One Who Knows" that life must go on, even if only in baby steps. Please accept my deepest thanks and sincerest happy birthday wish for all that is rightfully yours to bloom eternal. Love always - Mina

    1. And that "glint," my Mina is the best present I've gotten this year. There is something that happens to the soul when it is brightened by the smile of someone who we love. My soul is alight and I hope the brightness goes right to you. You've been in my thoughts every second of the day this week. My prayers and love are with you, and like I said to Linda, as soon as I cleanse my place, I will dance for you and all the energy I raise will be split in two between Oma Linda and you.

Secondly, this is a wonderful post, and I will be heading over to make those comments just as soon as I'm done here. I already follow Mina's blog so had planned to check on her blog in a bit anyway... I'll just make it a priority! :)

Thirdly,I would love to be entered in that giveaway, so want to remind you that I follow both your blogs. ;)

  13. Happy Birthday Magaly! May you realize your dreams in continued health, happiness and love. Just don’t forget the little people (namely me) when you’re holding press conferences, renting out entire floors in 5-star hotels, walking around with an entourage and hiding from the paparazzi.

I really like the gourd that is used in the display. Everything is wonderful, but that particular gourd isn’t offered. Why? *sulks & pouts*

Sending positive energy to Mina and OmaLinda.

Also went to Oma Linda's blog and wished her well. I've never been there before so that was special as well. :)
