I couldn’t believe my ears when Sammie Spencer told me that she had no idea what Fiction Journeying was. I mean, I swear I made up the phrase minutes ago!
Anyway, I might as well explain it to everyone. Fiction Journeying is the act of traveling into a work of fiction, and interacting with one or more characters for a short period of time, in order to learn more about their world.
Today, Sammie and I will visit a specific scene from her novel, Amaretto Flame.
Magaly: Go ahead and relax, Sammie. Picture three things: two concrete objects, plus a distinct emotion that reminds you of the scene you want to enter.
Sammie: I see Olivia putting down a shot glass full of whiskey, when she sees a guy giving Jenny a hard time. She is wearing a black waitress apron tied around her waist. There is outrage in the air.
Magaly: Good, keep the objects in your mind’s eyes. Let the emotion touch you, but remember the outrage is not yours. Reach out, hold my mind’s witchy hand, and we’ll journey into the world you created.
A few minutes later…
Magaly: Here we are. Remember I’ll do all the talking *Sammie nods and Olivia approaches the table* Hi Olivia—gotta love a good old nametag. *smiles in an extra friendly witchy way* I’m Magaly and this is my friend Sammie Spencer, and um… you know what? I’ll embrace my nosy witchy creepiness and hope you don’t freak out, run for it, or try to beat me senseless, but did you did you just break that guy’s knee?
Olivia: *blinks and looks around at customers, then whispers* “Oh, Goddess. Is this some kind of Wise One enforcement team? Am I in trouble, because he totally had it coming!” *puts hands on hips and stands up straighter* “And to answer your question: Because I thought breaking his head might draw too much attention.”
Magaly: *grins* Nope, my ways are a bit too eclectic for the Wise Ones’ taste. I am a Witch, and my friend here *points at Sammie and she waves* she is journeying with me for the first time. I’m glad you got that prick. He was scaring the other waitress, and I was about to damage the table with his face. So, I haven’t seen you here before, and I know I would never miss such a strong aura—so dark and good at the same time. Is this just a side job to keep you busy until the next jerk needs a broken bone?
Olivia: *cracks a smile* “Well, whoever you are, you seem like my kind of girls. If you can keep a secret, the truth is, I’m here in this town because I’m being punished. And this ‘job’ kind of started as a way to get back at my high-priestess.” *discreetly glances toward the stage.* “I never thought I’d actually get along with the humans here, but I guess they’re sort of...my friends.”
Magaly: Secret is my middle name. Actually, I don’t have a middle name, but Magaly Secret Guerrero sounds freaking cool and— *notices Olivia’s eyes widening and Sammie covering her face and shaking her head* Um, I’m sorry. I tend to talk a lot about myself, but of course I can keep a secret. Why are you been punished? And… *winks wickedly* have you met anyone, in this place, who is more than a friend? The stage looks interesting… *wink, wink*
Olivia: “I’m being punished because I opened my fat mouth about where I live; something that’s strictly forbidden. I only have to stay here until the Summer Solstice, though, and I’ll be free to go home. As for meeting someone who is more than a friend...” *blushes* “No. I mean, maybe in a different life.” *smiles softly* “Maybe I should say in a life where we were both the same, I might have met someone who was more than a friend.”
Magaly: I understand *tries not to drown in the sea of sadness rushing out of Olivia’s face*. I wish you the best, and hope to see you again. We must go, Sammie is not used to Journeying and by the way her projection is shimmering, I’m sure her essence is trying to get back to her body. But I have one last question, if someone wrote the story of your life, what would be the one thing your tale must contain?
Olivia: *Glances at the stage again. Takes deep breath.* “If someone were to write a story of my life, it would have to contain Everett. He’s my coven brother, but he’s also my very best friend. I couldn’t stand the thought of my life without him in it.” *smiles and waves* “Let me know if you need someone...you know, taken out or anything!”
Magaly: *Snickers at the last words and starts whispering in Sammie’s ear* Okay Sammie, close your eyes. I need you think about your body. Remember the way your flesh feels as it hugs your bones—comfortable, yours... Let mind take over flesh and bone and then open your eyes. *Sammie awakes* I know you need rest, journeying can leave a body tired and hungry, but before you hit the fridge or the rack, how did it feel to see your character in the flesh? And, where will Olivia go after Amaretto Flame?
Sammie: Amazing! I might be biased, but I absolutely adore Olivia. Yes, she makes bad choices and she has a lot of flaws, but those are the things that make her endearing to me, along with the fact that she really has a great heart. Now it’s my turn to tell a secret: Although she deserves it, it’s not for certain that Olivia gets a ‘happily ever after,’ at least not yet. The next part of her life will be divulged in the second Eagleton Coven book, Shadow Wishes, which should be out around late summer.
Thank you so much for taking me on this fantastic journey, Magaly! I can’t wait to read about future fiction journeys!
I hope that was as fun for you as it was for me, my Wicked Darlings! Now to the charming giveaway *grin* This lovely charm bracelet dangles with some of the beautiful things you’ll find in Amaretto Flame.
